    The Blacksburg Volunteer Rescue Squad received the prestigious Governor’s Award for Outstanding Emergency Medical Services from Gov. Glenn Youngkin at a May 19 ceremony marking the first day of National EMS Week.

      It’s been about 14 months since demolition began on the old Wasena Main Street bridge, built in 1938. Officials initially planned for the new bridge to be ready by spring 2026, but it’s now looking more like early summer.

      Roanoke’s equity board — comprised of volunteer citizen members who have a constitutional right to assemble — met Thursday night at the Melrose branch Library, joined briefly by Mayor Joe Cobb.

      Early voting begins Friday across the state in a Democratic primary election for lieutenant governor and attorney general and in House of Delegates and local race primaries, including two House races in the Roanoke area and board of supervisors primaries in Botetourt, Floyd and Montgomery counties.
