TAZEWELL — Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin and Lt. Gov. Winsome Earl Sears led a state delegation that met with Southwest Virginia leaders Thursday to make sure victims of February flooding are receiving needed assistance.
Meteorologists and former National Weather Service leaders say reducing vital weather balloon launches will degrade the accuracy of forecasts just as severe weather season kicks in.
The deadliest tornado in recorded U.S. history occurred 100 years ago. The Tri-State Tornado touched down in southeastern Missouri on March 18, 1925.
The most fatalities as of Saturday morning were in Missouri, authorities said, with at least 12 deaths.
The storm may bring up to a half foot of snow to a far Southwest Virginia still reeling from weekend floods and last week’s ice storm. The Roanoke and New River valleys are expecting about 3 inches of snow.
The next round of winter weather is expected to arrive Wednesday, with 3 to 5 inches of snow possible.
This winter, with record snow in New Orleans and drought and destructive wildfires in Southern California, has not been normal.
While snow and ice left by this week’s winter storm has melted in many lower elevations, a path of downed trees remains across the Roanoke and New River valleys. More than 90,000 homes were still without power Thursday evening after a mixture of snow, ice and rain felled trees and electrical lines.
