Former Virginia Tech pitcher Nic Enright was recalled from Triple-A Columbus by the Cleveland Guardians on Saturday and saw action in the Guardians’ win.
Cleveland put pitcher Andrew Walters on the 15-day injured list.
Enright pitched one scoreless inning of relief in Cleveland’s 7-5 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday, allowing no hits and one walk.
Enright, who was diagnosed with a rare form of Hodgkin lymphoma in December 2022, was promoted from Columbus for the first time last weekend.
The Rocky Mount resident made his major league debut last Sunday, pitching two scoreless innings of relief in a loss at Detroit.
Enright made his second big-league appearance Tuesday in a 9-5 loss to the L.A. Dodgers. He pitched the ninth inning, giving up a three-run homer to Max Muncy. He was sent back down to Columbus the following day.
Athletes from Virginia Tech and Virginia earned berths in the NCAA national championships with their performances Saturday on the final day of the NCAA East meet in Jacksonville, Fla.
The top 12 finishers in each event at the meet earn berths in the NCAA national championships.
Margot Appleton of UVa was second in the 5,000 meters (15:25.99).
Appleton also was sixth in the 1,500 meters (4:08.04), with former NCAA 800-meters champ Lindsey Butler of Virginia Tech finishing 10th (4:10.32).
UVa’s Celia Rifaterra took third in the women’s high jump (5-11 1/2), with teammate Carly Tarentino tying for eighth (5-10 1/2).
Virginia Tech’s Caitlyn Bobb took seventh in the 400 meters (51.65).
UVa’s Estel Valeanu was eighth in the women’s discus (180-8).

Virginia Tech adds transfer
Former Stetson infielder Addison Foster announced Friday night on Twitter that she is transferring to Virginia Tech.
Foster made the All-Atlantic Sun second team as a sophomore this year. She hit .411 with 12 doubles, seven triples, five homers, 45 RBIs, 15 stolen bases and 53 runs scored.
The Illinois native hit .314 with 24 stolen bases and 31 runs scored in 2024, when she made the All-Atlantic Sun second team and the Atlantic Sun all-freshman team.
• In other news, ex-Hokie Jayden Jones announced on Twitter that she has decided to transfer to Oklahoma State. Her younger sister, Aubrey, is an Oklahoma State signee.
